What cookies are
Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. Similar technologies, such as local storage and pixels, work in comparable ways. In this policy we call them all “cookies”.
The cookies we use
Strictly necessary
These make the website work and cannot be switched off. They include the cookie that remembers your cookie choices, and login cookies used only by our editorial team when signed in to manage the magazine. Readers do not need an account, and these cookies do not track you.
Advertising (only with your consent)
We show advertising through Google AdSense to help fund the magazine. With your consent, Google and its advertising partners use cookies to show ads, limit how often you see the same ad, measure performance, prevent fraud and, if you allow it, personalise ads based on your interests. Google’s cookies include names such as IDE, test_cookie, __gads and __gpi; their duration ranges from a single session to around 13 months. A full list of the partners involved is shown in our consent banner.
If you refuse advertising cookies, you will still see ads, but they will not be personalised and Google will only use the limited data permitted without consent.
Embedded content
Videos or social media posts embedded in articles, for example from YouTube, Vimeo or Instagram, may set their own cookies when they load. These are controlled by the respective services.
What we do not use
We do not currently use analytics cookies, and our fonts are hosted on our own server, so no font provider receives data about your visit. If this changes, we will update this policy and ask for your consent where required.
Your choices
When you first visit, a banner lets you accept or refuse non-essential cookies, or choose by purpose. Non-essential cookies are only set after you agree. You can change your choice at any time using the “Cookie settings” link at the bottom of every page.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may affect how the website works. To learn more about how Google uses information from sites that use its services, visit policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites, and to manage personalised ads, visit adssettings.google.com.
